Abstract

851,202. Batteries. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1958 [Oct. 9, 1957], No. 32202/58. Class 53 A rechargeable dry cell comprises a metal container 10 constituting the positive terminal and enclosing a cathode 16 of manganese dioxide and graphite bonded with Portland cement and potassium hydroxide solution. A small amount of steel wool may be included. A separator 22 in the form of bag encloses the anode 25 consisting of zinc powder mixed with potassium hydroxide solution and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. The bag 22 may consist of three layers, the outer layers being made of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride, the middle layer being a semi-permeable membrane of cellulose acetate. The anode is made by mixing the powdered zinc with water and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and extruding the mixture into thin sheets which are dried and crushed. Potassium hydroxide solution is then added to the crushed material to form a gel. A copper screen 24 serves as anode collector and is connected by a wire 32 to the terminal plate 34. A cylinder of polyethylene sponge made electrolyterepellent by being dipped in a paraffin solution of ether and then dried may be placed within the screen 24. The elements of the cell are covered at both ends by elastic permeable spacers 18, 26 to provide expansion spaces 20,28. The cell is closed by a plastic disc 30 and is provided at its lower end with a blow-out safety vent 14. Specification 851,201 is referred to.
