Abstract

<PICT:0851021/IV(a)/1> In a process for treating the surface of a film of plastic material to render the surface receptive to pencil and ink drawings or to printing or lacquering, abrasive particles mixed in a body of water are thrown on to the surface by means of a centrifugal impeller at a velocity sufficient to produce a multiplicity of fine cuts in the surface and give the surface a matt finish. Examples of materials to which the process is applicable are cellulose esters and ethers. polystyrene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polyurethanes and chemically modified rubbers. The abrasive may be white aluminium oxide having a particle size of 80-850 mesh. Velocities in the range 200-1000 feet per second are suitable for projecting the abrasive stream. As shown, the abrasive mixture is fed to the centre of the rotor A of a centrifugal impeller by a conduit 2 and thence is projected by the blades 1 of the impeller against a film 3 which is caused to travel longitudinally beneath the impeller.
