850,969. Digging root-crops. PATTISON, T., DIXON, T., and YOUNG, J. E. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 17, 1956], No. 35209/56. Class 6(3). A potato-digger comprises a non-rotatable share 33 with a rotary cage 19, 20, 21, at the rear of it, to receive potatoes and earth, and stationary tines or prongs 32 adjacent to the forward edge of the cage which co-operate with blades 22 on the barrel to cut off haulms. The machine comprises a frame 10, 11 of angle members carrying plates 13, 14 in which the cage rotates on rollers 18, the frame having a three-point attachment 15, 16, 17 to tractor draught-links. The cage comprises horizontal bars 21 mounted between rings 19, 20 and carries knives 22 which co-operate with the fixed prongs 31. The cage is driven by a sprocket 30 engaging the bars and driven, in turn, by a shaft 23 connected to the tractor power take-off, through a chain drive 27. The share 33 is U-shaped, tapers rearwardly, and extends rearwardly into the cage ; it has a renewable point 33a. The angle of attack of the share is adjustable by a turnbuckle on the draughtlinks.
