Abstract

850,961. Control systems for discharge lamps. WARNER, A. R., and WARD. D. A. Nov. 9, 1956 [Nov. 16, 1955], No. 32782/55. Class 38 (4). An electric discharge tube installation is provided with two sources of power, one being of zero or low frequency, the other of high frequency, the voltage of the zero or low frequency source being -without the assistance of the voltage of the high frequency source-unable to initiate a discharge in the discharge tubes in the installation. A discharge tube installation comprises a number of discharge tubes Ta, Tb ... Tn, these tubes being supplied in parallel from a direct current source A, the voltage of which is insufficient to initiate a discharge in any of the tubes. The discharge in tube Ta is initiated by the application of a high frequency voltage thereto from a source B, the voltage gradually increasing from zero to a maximum, thus the discharge gradually spreads along the tube from one end. When the tube Ta is fully ignited a relay Ra operates to change over contacts Ral so that the high frequency voltage from the source B is applied to the tube Tb. As the voltage rises once more from zero the discharge spreads along the tube Tb as in the first tube, the operation proceeding until all the tubes in the installation are ignited. The return of the high frequency voltage to zero after each tube is ignited is caused by a pulse which is induced in a transformer Trp in the direct current supply at the completion of the discharge in each tube, the pulse being applied to the high frequency source through a noise limiting device C. The on and off times of the tubes are controlled by a device D. The magnitude of the voltage of the D.C. source may be such that it may-or may not-sustain the discharge in the tubes as desired. The D.C. source may be replaced by a low frequency A.C. source. Specification 679,368 is referred to.
