Abstract

850,958. Electrodialysis of photographic emulsions. IONICS Inc. March 19, 1958, No. 8875/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 41 Gelatine photographic emulsions containing a silver halide and dissolved ionic materials are purified by passing an aqueous suspension of the emulsion through an electrolytic chamber bounded on at least one side by a semi-permeable membrane permeable selectively to ions of one predetermined polarity, passing an electrolytic solution on the opposite side of said membrane and applying an electric potential across the membrane to cause ions of the said polarity to pass from the said aqueous suspension to the said electrolytic solution. The emulsion may be passed through a chamber bounded on opposite sides by other chambers and separated therefrom by cation-permeable and anion-permeable membranes respectively; these chambers may form part of a plurality of treating chambers having washing chambers on either side separated therefrom by perm-selective membranes. Suitable membranes may be ion-exchange resins in membrane form or impregnated in or coated on a suitable support. Specification 720,002 is referred to.
