[Also in Group XI] In a method of crimping thread and like filamentary thermoplastic material by leading the thread &c. successively through a twist stop, heating and cooling devices, false-twister and thread discharge means, the heating and/or cooling device(s) comprise surfaces mounted in different planes relatively to one and the same straight line and arranged in succession in the direction of movement of the thread and means for heating or cooling the surfaces on the side facing the line. In order to eliminate natural oscillation of the thread traversing the surfaces, the latter are mounted so that they contact the surface of an imaginary cylinder of which the diameter equals the thickness of the yarn. The heater/cooler shown in Fig. 1 is formed by heated or heat-dissipating plates 5 almost contacting the line connecting eyelet 1 and a discharge device 2 and contacting the running thread therebetween. Sections or plates 5, Fig. 2, formed by nuts at 7 in a single strip 6 may be bent to form a trough the bottom of which is traversed by the thread. As shown in Fig. 3, thread is led along a resistance wire 8 bent into a helix (having less than 5 turns per 20 cm.) in such manner that it contacts the thread at a point in every cross-section of its length and that adjacent cross-sections establish contact at different points on the thread surface. The strip or wire may be of stainless steel and heated directly by the passage of electric current therethrough: alternatively the uncut portion of strip 6 may be in the form of a box through which fluid heating (or cooling) medium is passed.
