Abstract

A container or box is formed from paperboard, metal or other flexible sheets of material scored to define container staves or box panels, the blank having secured to each longitudinal edge thereof a hoop-and-liner, suitably notched to allow the blank and the hoop-and-liners to be bent along said score lines, and flexible lacing means associated with each hoop-and-liner whereby the blank and the hoop-and-liners may be tightly engaged about top and bottom closures. As shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the longitudinal edges of the blank 30, are folded inwardly to present three thicknesses of material and a hoop-andliner 40, with a cross-section as shown, is stapled thereto, each hoop-and-liner having cut-away notches aligned with the transverse score lines 31. Binding wires 47 extending within the hoops-and-liners are used to draw the blank tightly around the top and bottom closures. Alternatively, Fig. 28, the blank may be scored to define a box and there may be perforations through the hoop-and-liners and the folded rims of the box therein such that each binding wire 86 may lie outside the hoop-and-liner, except at the corners where it passes through the perforations to overlie the top and bottom closures 84, 85 (85 is not shown). Additional wires or straps may be placed about intermediate portions of the hogshead in order to give it further support. Packing tobacco into the containers. A charger shell 50, Fig. 13, is rigidly supported above the container 30 and is aligned therewith by clamps 52. A prising machine 55 is then used to introduce tobacco into the container 30 via the shell 50, the operation of the charger being repeated until the container is filled.
