Abstract
850,785. Moulding glass-fibre rods. SIEKMANN, K. June 27, 1958 [June 28, 1957], No. 20751/58. Class 87(2). A continuous process for making rods from glass fibres impregnated with a polyester resin comprises passing the fibres and the resin downwardly through a drawing die in a heated vacuum chamber to draw together and bond the fibres and resin and cutting the finished rods into lengths. Glass-fibre threads 10 are drawn, by a drawing device 20, from spools 5 mounted on stationary discs 1, 4, and from spools 6, 7 mounted on discs 2, 3 rotating in opposite directions. The fibres enter a funnel 11 and are wrapped with woven glass fibre 25 and impregnated with resin from a container 8. On leaving the funnel 11 the strand of fibres enters a vacuum chamber 12 and is drawn through a heated lubricated shaping die 14 wherein the resin is set. A circular saw 22 cuts the set rod into lengths. The shaping die may produce rods of shapes other than circular, e.g. 1, Fig. 2 (not shown). The shaping die may be cooled.
