Abstract

A highly absorbent flaked soybean hull product of low bulk density suitable for use as an animal food is prepared by moistening soybean hulls with water, heating them, e.g. in externally heated vessels and/or by injecting live steam into a mass of the hulls, and crushing the resultant curled hulls to flakes, e.g. by passing them between rolls. Before heating the moisture content of the hulls is adjusted, i.e. by addition of water and by condensation of steam on the hulls to preferably 15 to 25% by weight and 2 to 12% by weight of oil or fat, e.g. acidulated or cotton seed oil may also be added. From 5 to 40% by weight of liquid molasses may be incorporated in the final flake product.
