850,344. Gripping devices for handling bottles. CERTUS MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. Oct. 30, 1957 [Oct. 30, 1956; Sept. 13, 1957], No. 33889/57. Class 78 (4). [Also in Group XVII] A machine for filling or emptying bottle cases (see Group XVII) comprises manifold bottle-' gripping devices each suspended by a spring from a radial arm 15 which is mounted for vertical movement under the action of a cam in a rotary frame. Each device comprises a frame 22 supporting three shafts 24 on which are mounted pairs of spring-connected arms 44, 48 carrying grippers 26 adapted to engage the necks of the bottles. The arms 44, 48 have lostmotion connections with further pairs of arms 35, 36 and 351, 361 interconnected by links 40 so that the grippers are opened and closed simultaneously. The grippers are normally held in the open position by a strong spring 41 interconnecting the outer arms 35<1>, 36<1> and are moved to a closed position by rotation of a central cam acting on the arms 35, 36. After the cam has been rotated to close the grippers it is automatically locked by a latch 50, the grippers remaining closed until the latch is tripped.
