Abstract

849,421. Sorting letters. THRISSELL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and STREETER, F. C. D. April 27, 1959 [April 29, 1958], No. 13576/58. Class 78 ( 1 ). In a letter sorting machine having a conveyer for carrying letters along a row of compartments 4 comprising a series of driven rollers 1 and a series of co-operating freely rotatable pressure rollers 5, means is provided for releasing the pressure of the rollers 5 when it is desired to remove a letter. The rollers 5A are journalled in a bracket 6 which is pivoted to the arm 12 of a pivoted lever. The other arm 14 of this lever bears on an eccentric 15 which is turnable by a handle 16. The bracket 6 is connected adjustably to a bracket 8 to which is attached a flexible strip 9 carrying the spindles 10 of the rollers 5. The other end of the strip is anchored to the machine. Curved leaf springs 18 press the rollers 5 on to the letters. The rollers 5A are sprung independently by helical springs 7 and the rollers 5B by leaf springs 17 fixed to the bracket 6.
