Abstract

Polyolefin filaments are produced by the use of an extrusion press by a process which comprises adding from 2% to 25% of a mineral oil having a boiling point above 250 DEG C. to a low pressure polymer of a polyolefin prior to spinning and heating the mixture to above 250 DEG C. at some suitable point in the spinning apparatus, e.g. in the extrusion press. Polyethylene is the specified polyolefin while the mineral oil may be a hydrocarbon mixture with a melting point below 100 DEG C., e.g. one containing at least 95% aliphatic or cycloaliphatic compounds.
