Abstract
A cured rubber vulcanisate composition comprises a rubbery copolymer containing a major part of a copolymer of a conjugated diene and a heterocyclic monomer containing a heterocyclic nitrogen atom in the ring and a having a sole H2C = C<substituent on a carbon atom of said ring, said rubbery copolymer having been compounded with a silane free finely ground mineral pigment as the sole reinforcing agent. Specified dienes are 1,3-butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene, piperylene, 2-methyl-1,3-pentadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene,phenylbutadiene,2,3-dimethyl-1, 3-hexadiene, 2-methoxy-3-ethylbutadiene, 2-ethyoxy-3-ethyl-1,3-hexadiene, 2-cyano-1,3-butadiene and 2,3-diethyl-1,3-octadiene. Many heterocyclic compounds are specified, examples being substituted pyridines and quinolines. The copolymers may also contain residues of copolymerisable monomers of which many are specified. Mineral fillers specified are clays, kaolin, calcium silicate, titanium dioxide, hydrated alumina, calcined magnesia and calcium carbonate. In the Examples :-(I) a copolymer made from butadiene and 2-vinylpyridine by conventional means is compounded with a butadiene-styrene rubber, silica or aluminium silicate and conventional vulcanising means and cured; (II) aluminium silicate, titanium dioxide and conventional vulcanising means are mixed with (a) and (b) a butadiene/2-methyl-5-vinyl-pyridine rubber, (c) a butadiene/2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine/acrylonitrile rubber and the mixtures cured.
