Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerised by contact with a dialkyl (preferably ditertiary alkyl) magnesium compound, particularly ditertiary butyl magnesium but diethyl magnesium is also mentioned. The polymerisation is conducted in an organic solvent, preferably etheric, e.g. diethyl ether and/or dioxan. In the Examples, the magnesium compound is prepared by adding dioxan to a solution of the corresponding Grignard reagent in ether whereupon a Mg Cl2 complex is precipitated, the desired compound removing in the supernatan liquid. Purification of the polymer may be effected by treatment with water, steam, alcohols such as methanol or butanol and/or acids (e.g. HCl), and dissolving in e.g. tetrahydrofuran followed by precipitation with e.g. methanol. It is stated that polyvinyl chlorides of high crystallisibilities can be prepared according to the invention and measurement of this characteristic is described.ALSO:Di-tertiary butyl and diethyl magnesium are prepared by treating ether solutions of tertiarybutyl magnesium chloride and ethyl magnesium bromide, respectively, with dioxan and removing the magnesium chloride complex precipitated.
