Abstract

In the fluidised roasting of finely divided sulphide ores, cooled product gas from the roasting operation is blown substantially vertically downwards in a sharply limited and undiffused stream or streams on to the surface of the fluidised bed, in order to promote the settling of small particles suspended in the main upward gas stream. Such cooled product gas is preferably at 300-400 DEG C., and corresponds to 1/5 -\ba1/6 of the total quantity of air blown through the grate of the furnace. The downwardly moving gas stream also serves to prevent overheating in the bed and thus prevents slag formation. The cooled gas may be introduced by a plurality of nozzles, arranged in the top or inside the periphery of the furnace, and directed downwards towards the middle of the bed. Preferably the cooled gas is blown vertically downwards upon the middle of the bed.
