Abstract

An aqueous shampoo composition comprises by weight (a) 0.4-7% of a cationic surface active agent (of many specified, stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and the lactic or citric acid salts of stearyl-1-amidoethyl-2-heptadecyl-2-imidazoline are preferred, (b) 2-20% of a non-ionic polyoxyalkylene surface active agent (of many specified, the lower alkylphenyl polyethylene glycol ethers are preferred), and (c) 8-20%, but not less than the amount of (b) of one of the following cycloimidines <FORM:0847570/III/1> <FORM:0847570/III/2> wherein R is a hydrocarbon group of 4-18 carbon atoms; R1, R2, and R3 are hydrocarbon groups of 1-4 carbon atoms which may be hydroxy-substituted, or hydrocarbon groups of 2-4 carbon atoms interrupted by an ether or keto group, and which may also be hydroxy-substituted; and M is an alkali metal, particularly sodium or potassium. In addition, the composition may suitably include (d) 0.4-7% of an alkanolamide of a fatty acid having 10-20 carbon atoms, the alkanol group containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, and (e) 0.4-7% of a compound of formula <FORM:0847570/III/3> in which R7 and R8 are both alkyl groups containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and R9 is either <FORM:0847570/III/4> or <FORM:0847570/III/5> where R10 and R11 are also alkyl groups containing up to 4 carbon atoms. The pH of the compositions are adjusted to 3-7.5, preferably 4.5-6.5 by the addition of such acids as citric, lactic and tartaric acids. Ethanol, isopropanol, opacifiers, perfumes, colour, stabilizers or preservatives may also be incorporated. U.S.A. Specifications 2,528,378 and 2,773,068 are referred to.
