847,204. Making dynamo-electric machines; seaming. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 33755/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXV] An open-ended sheet metal cylindrical body 14 bent to shape in a tin can-making machine and two sheet metal end caps 12 forming a dynamo-electric machine casing are secured together, simultaneously in the Fig. 6 embodiment shown, by bending channel-shaped edges 71 of the end caps over outwardly bent ends 70 of the body by means of rollers 86 movable radially of the machine; the end caps are supported in plates 80, 94, either the plates or rollers are rotated, and the rollers are moved radially inwardly to form the rolled seam 90 shown in Fig. 6a. In another embodiment, not shown, one end cap is thus joined to the body, the motor internal parts are assembled therein, and then the other end cap is joined to the body. In Fig. 6b is shown a modified seal wherein the body and cap edge have interlocking beads 100, 102 respectively which permit removal of the end cap.
