A moderator structure for a nuclear reactor has fuel channels and additional vacant channels. Throttling means are provided for each element so that the moderator coolant temperature rise is greater along the vacant channels than along the fuel channels. The moderator may be graphite and the coolant nitrogen. Specification 847,122 is referred to.
