846,723. Ink ribbon &c. mechanisms. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1957. [Feb. 14, 1956], No. 4731/57. Class 100(4) In a printing machine the paper 1, Fig. 1, is fed by a platen 2 and pin wheels 3, connected by gears 7, 8, 9. Feed mechanism assemblies 11 are relatively adjustable for different paper widths. A feed assembly 15, which can slide laterally on shafts 10, 13, Figs. 1, 3, 4a, moves a tape 17 into and out of printing position. One revolution of a shaft 6 causes two revolutions of a shaft 25 through gears 7, 8, 9, Fig. 1 and 23, 24, Figs. 3, 4a. A tape carrier 16 is moved up and down by arms 29, 38, Fig. 3, which are rocked about a pivot 31 by a cam 27 rotated by the shaft 25. The platen 2 has two corrugated inserts 51, 52, Fig. 4a, and the platen 2 and the shaft 25 are synchronised so that when the tape 17 is in printing position the corrugations lie behind the tape; thus, the paper is printed on both sides and corrugated simultaneously. By replacing the cam 27 by another with several hollow portions, multi-line reverse printing will be obtained. The platen may bear several corrugated inserts in suitable positions. Electromechanical clutches may be provided to make the corrugated inserts selectively inoperative or selectively to couple the cam 27 to the shaft 25 for intermittent rotation.
