Abstract

Porous material is impregnated with a solution consisting of 65 to 99% by weight of furfuryl alcohol, 0,5 to 19,5% by weight of water, and 0,5 to 10% by weight of a catalyst consisting of cadmium nitrate, cobaltous nitrate, nickel nitrate, zinc nitrate, zinc chloride, a dibasic or tribasic organic acid having an ionization constant for the first hydrogen of 1X10-3, or a quinoline salt of a strong acid, and the impregnated material is heated at 40 DEG C. to 105 DEG C. to form a cured furan resin therein. The solution may contain up to 25% furfural. In Examples, wood, fire brick, woven asbestos, glass fibre, laminated cardboard, magnesia insulation, sandstone, moulded plaster, porous metal filter, carbon and pressed wood fibre board, are impregnated with solutions containing furfuryl alcohol, furfural, zinc chloride and water, and heated to form resin in the materials. Other catalysts mentioned are citric acid, malonic acid, fumaric acid, phthalic acid and tartaric acid.
