Abstract

846,131. Semi-conductor radio receiving circuits. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. May 6, 1957 [May 15, 1956], No. 14362/57. Class 40(6). The radio-frequency input stage of a transistor receiver comprises a parallel-tuned circuit, part, at least, of which is connected in parallel with a semiconductor diode so that when large-amplitude signals are received, the resistance of the diode falls to increase the damping of the tuned circuit and reduce overloading of the first stage of the receiver. In the arrangement shown, the diode 19 is connected in series with variable resistor 20 and emitter-bias resistor 17 across the tuned circuit 12, 13, 14. The diode is so poled that in addition to increasing the load on the circuit for large-amplitude signals it produces a positive bias to reduce the gain of the transistor 16. The shunting effect of the diode may be adjusted to a desired value -by variation of the resistor 20. The diode 19 may be composed of any suitable semi-conductor material; some advantage may be gained by the use of silicon diodes which do not become effective until voltage input levels which are higher than those required for germanium diodes are reached. In modified forms of circuit, Figs. 2 and 3 -(not shown), the diode exercises a shunting effect only and does not provide a bias for the emitter of the transistor. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) a double-base grown-junction type transistor is used.
