Abstract
846,012. Projectile fuzes. FERRANTI Ltd. May 15, 1958 [Feb. 23, 1957], No. 6136/57. Class 9(1). An arming device for a projectile fuze comprises a frame 10 in which is pivoted a shaft 11 arranged transversely of the projectile and, urged to rotate by a spring 30 and carrying stop means controlling the release of a parallel shaft 29 which may operate an electric switch. One end 12 of the shaft 11, which is of reduced diameter, is surrounded by a collar 13 connected to the shaft by a spring 14. Spring 14 stresses the collar 13 to a position in which an arm 16 extending from the collar abuts a stop 16A. A collar 18 rigidly mounted on the shaft 11 is provided on the face adjacent the collar 13 with abutments 19, 20 corresponding with abutments 21, 22 on the adjacent face of collar 13. In the position of rest, the bent-up end 25 of a lever 26 carried by the shaft 29 extends through a slot 27 in the frame 10 and engages in an annular recess 23 in the collar 18, the shaft 11 being immobilized by the spring 14 which holds the abutment 22 of collar 13 against abutment 20 of collar 18. The spring 30, which is weaker than spring 14, is arranged in a housing 33 having teeth 32 which can be adjusted by an element 31 pivoted in the frame 10 to vary the tension of the spring. The shaft 11 carries a wheel 34 connected by a gear train 35 to a flywheel 36. The device is so mounted in a projectile that on firing a weight 15 on the arm 16 turns the collar 13 and so tends to turn the shaft against the drive of its spring 30. This drives the flywheel 36 and so the projectile accelerates the shaft 11 rotates until the end 25 of lever 26 escapes through an opening in the collar 18; the shaft 29 being stressed by a spring 28 rotates until the end 25 of lever 26 reaches the end of the slot 27, when the fuze is armed.
