Apparatus for monitoring machines and recording the duration and cause of idle time comprises in parallel two electric relays RL1, RL4, each de-energized when the machine is idle and a pulse generator 11 adapted when in closed circuit to transmit pulses through a selector switch with five channels CH1 to CH5 to a teletype punch head 12, the circuits being such that on de-energizing the relay RL4 the pulse generator 11 is connected with the punch head 12 through channel CH3, whatever the position of the switch arm and that on the simultaneous de-energizing of the relay RL1 a circuit is closed which includes a synchronous motor-driven, cam-operated switch 10, S5 which, by means of another relay RL3, cyclically opens and closes the circuit including the pulse generator 11, pulses are thereby sent to one of the punches to produce a succession of holes in a moving tape for as long as the machine remains idle, and the circuits also being such that on re-energizing the relay RL4 a parallel circuit is closed which connects the pulse generator 11 with all the channels of the selector switch and on re-energizing the relay RL1 and operating a manual switch S2 to actuate the pulse generator, pulses are thereby sent through a channel or channels as selected by the operator by setting the selector switch arm in accordance with the cause of the stoppage to actuate a punch or punches to record the cause in code. A relay RL2 controls a warning circuit.
