Abstract

845,090. Filters. PANMETALS & PROCESSES Inc. April 21, 1959, No. 13512/59. Class 46. Each cell 10, Fig. 1, in a filter of the tilting- cell type is mounted on a shaft 12 the ends of which ride on concentric circular tracks so that the whole array of cells rotates about a common vertical axis during each cycle, each cell being inverted about its own shaft when the cake is to be dropped out. In the cell a false bottom 16, Fig. 2, of moulded rubber-like material is provided and is furnished with drainage holes 18, supporting members 20, a marginal portion 16a and a marginal depression 24. A filter cloth 32 and the false bottom are retained in place by insertion of an elongated hard removable caulking member 34 in the depression 24 and underneath an inwardlyprojecting rib 26. The terminal portion of filter cloth extends between member 34 and the depression 24, the cell wall 28 and the rib 26 respectively. Marginal portion 16a of false bottom 16 is engaged by a rigid retaining rib 27 upstanding from the base of the cell. A drain aperture 22 is provided. The caulking member 34 may extend either along a single side or about all sides of the cell. In Fig. 3 the terminal portion of filter cloth 32 is wrapped around a grommet 44 occupying a groove 42. In this case rib 50 is covered with a layer 51 of resilient material, so that the false bottom 40 may be of rigid material. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the caulking member is circular in cross section and resilient. In Fig. 5 (not shown) layer 51 of resilient material is omitted from rib 50, and the marginal portion of filter cloth extends around both grommet and caulking strip, which are both resilient. Also, the base retaining rib, equivalent to 27 (Fig. 2), is integral with the cell base. The invention is applicable to all types of cells which are tilted or inverted, during the filtering cycle, for cake removal.
