Abstract

844,641. Heat-insulating units. JOHNSMANVILLE CORPORATION. June 4, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 17688/57. Class 99(2). A welded envelope of "Inconel" (Registered Trade Mark) containing bonded asbestos or mineral wool 16 forms a unit, e.g. to be mounted on a structural member 52, Fig. 6, of an aircraft, to isolate a jet engine nacelle, and has an edge wall 32 connected to the main body of the unit by flexible walls 40 which can buckle (see Fig. 6) to permit movement of the edge wall 32 towards the main body when the edge of the unit is fitted in position with a tool 54. The walls 40 subsequently straighten as the edge 32 resumes position under the action of springs 46 which are secured to the main body of the unit (as shown) or to the inner surface of the edge wall 32 and rest slidably at their free ends on that inner surface or the main body accordingly. The yielding edge portion 32, 40 which contains fibre like the main unit, need not be narrower than the main unit as is shown. The main unit is relatively rigid since its edge is formed by cutting, bending and welding a channel member 26 and the face sheets 20 are thicker and less soft than the flexible walls 40. There may be internal cross-members.
