Abstract

3,3,3-Trifluoropropene is prepared by contacting, for at least 0/m15 seconds at a temperature above 150 DEG C. and in the presence of a chromium oxyfluoride catalyst, at least a 3/m10 to 1/m10 mole ratio of hydrogen fluoride and a three carbon atom halogenated hydrocarbon containing 3 or 4 hydrogen atoms and 3 or 4 halogen atoms other than iodine, not more than 2 of which are fluorine, one terminal carbon atom containing no hydrogen thereon. A minimum reaction temperature of 225 DEG C. is preferred. Specified starting halohydrocarbons are 3,3,3-trichloropropene, 3,3,3-tribromopropene, 3,3-dichloro-3-bromopropene, 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, 1,1,1,3-tetrabromopropane, 3,3-dichloro-3-fluoropropene, 3,3-dibromo - 3 - fluoropropene, 3 - bromo - 3,3 - difluoropropene, 3 - chloro - 3,3 - difluoropropene, 1,1,3 - trichloropropene - 1,1,1-dichloro - 3 - bromopropene - 1,1,3 - dichloro - 1,1 - difluoropropane and 1,1,1-trichloro-3-bromopropane. The catalysts used may be those of Specifications 790,335 and 821,211.
