Abstract

844,363. Automatic speed-control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1956 [July 12, 1955], No. 20136/55. Class 38 (4). In a system for a plurality of D.C. electric motors arranged to drive independent consecutive sections of a material treating machine, which includes for each motor a speed reference regulator, a speed signal generator, and means whereby the speed is maintained in accordance with the setting of the regulator, the regulating means is also responsive to a third electrical quantity dependent on the load in a manner such that for any given setting of the speed reference regulator the speed of the motor decreases as the load increases, and there is provided for each motor, manually controlled field-regulating means and means arranged to reduce the magnitude of the third electrical quantity for any given value of motor load as the field excitation of the motor is reduced by the manually controlled regulating means. The speed of series motor 10a is controlled in accordance with the energization of an auxiliary field winding 10d by the difference between a reference voltage applied to leads 18 and 12 and the output of tachometer generator 17. The error signal is applied to the control winding 15b of a magnetic amplifier 15 which includes a further winding 15a opposed to the control winding and energized in accordance with the armature current. Ganged potentiometers 13, 16, 19 which are set according to the desired speed adjust the main motor field to a value such as will produce the required speed, reduce the effect of the winding 15a at lower speeds, and reduce the tachometer field 17b respectively. A stabilizing feedback field is also provided. The arrangement which is stated to be useful in a steel rolling mill is said to improve the speed regulation by increasing the error signal in response to load changes. In a modified arrangement described control is effected by a booster in the armature circuit.
