An annular packing comprises a resilient ring 1, Fig. 2, having outer and inner rim portions connected by an annular diaphragm, the outer rim portion 3 being stretched over a supporting ring 4 so that a lip 2 on the inner rim portion makes sealing engagement with the adjacent machine part. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the supporting ring 41 is formed as a solid ring with a bevelled face 11 for engaging the diaphragm portion of the packing ring. Two packing rings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> may be nested together as shown in Fig. 5 with either one supporting ring 411 (upper half of Figure) or two supporting rings 40, 41 (lower half of Figure); the space between the radial faces of the packing rings may be filled with grease. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, two packing rings are nested together over a supporting ring 15 which may be of a solid plastic and have annular recesses to receive a lubricant. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the packing ring is formed from a rubber strip 30 which is stretched around the cylindrical part of a solid supporting ring 42. Flexible stirrups 32, 33 on the ends of the strip overlap when the latter is in position, and clamps 34, 35 on the inner sides of the stirrups then engage in a gap 43 in the ring 42. Dismantling may be effected by inserting a tool behind a rim 45, Fig. 7, on the ring 42.
