Abstract

843,956. Mass spectrographs. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 21, 1957], No. 5847/57. Class 40(3). [Also in Group XXXVI] A mass spectrometer (not shown) has a collector plate 1 receiving an ionized beam which is scanned by a magnet winding 2 excited through current stabilizer 3 from a scanning voltage generator 4; the plate 1 being connected to an amplifier 5 having feedback through resistor 7 switchable at 9 to a tap on output potentiometer 8 or to the entire output, which is fed through D.C. amplifier 6, series diode 10, and changeover switch 11 to charge either of capacitances 12, 13; which are differentially connected across valve voltmeter 14. An amplifier 18 excited from amplifier 5 operates relay contacts 16 just before peak output to charge capacitance 15 from either capacitance 12 or 13 and then to discharge into resistor 17. Switches 9, 11 are operated by synchronizer 19 responsive to flux variation of magnet 2. In measurement of isotope abundance ratio two isotope beams of different mass number are scanned over plate 1 and generate corresponding pulses representing respective isotope abundances. Immediately before arrival of the larger pulse, switches 9, 11 operate in synchronism with the scan to connect the amplifier feedback path direct to its output to reduce gain to a fixed level, and to connect capacitance 12 to be charged from diode 10. On arrival of the smaller pulse, switches 9, 11 change over to reduce the amplifier feedback to that from potentiometer 8 and to connect capacitance 13 to be charged; the difference voltage indicated by valve voltmeter 14 being zeroized by adjustment of potentiometer 8 of the amplifier feedback during the smaller pulse derived from the scan of the less abundant isotope beam; the amplifier gain ratio during scans of the isotope beams and thus the isotope abundance ratio being indicated by the potentiometer setting. To remove errors due to correlated variations in magnitude of the isotope beam pulses, relay contacts 16 discharge each capacitance 12, 13 into capacitance 15 by a small fraction of the total charge just before the peak voltage of each scan and discharge capacitor 15 into resistance 17 as the peak output of amplifier 5 falls to zero.
