Abstract

A solid copolymer of a higher alkyl vinyl ester or ether monomer, having a terminal long chain alkyl group of at least ten carbon atoms, and maleic acid or a half ester or half amide thereof, may be prepared by copolymerizing the vinyl monomer with maleic amhydride and then treating the copolymer to open the anhydride to form the corresponding dicarboxylic acid, monocarboxylic half-ester or half-amide. The treatment may comprise hydrolysis, reaction with an alcohol e.g. methanol, ethanol, npropanol or n-butanol, or amine e.g. anhydrous ammonia, methylamine, ethylamine, to form the half-ester or half-amide respectively, with a bi-functional compound e.g. ethanolamine, to form a hydroxy half amide, or with a polyfunctional reactant such as ethylene glycol, to form a hydroxy half ester and to introduce cross-linking between polymer chains. The copolymer contains carboxyl groups and is useful in the production of ester adhesion coatings on tapes and films. Examples of vinyl monomers are vinyl stearate, vinyl octadoeylether, or an allyl ether or ester e.g. allyl stearate.
