Abstract
843,452. Permeable diaphragm materials. OLDHAM & SON Ltd. Aug. 13, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26592/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXVI] A permeable diaphragm material having pores of predetermined size comprises a base diaphragm material having formed thereon and extending over one face thereof a continuous lace-like network of a thermoplastic comprising abutting finely-divided particles of the thermoplastic fused together at their points of contact and adhering to the base diaphragm material, and the pores of predetermined size being constituted by the interstices of the continuous lace-like network. The diaphragm may take the form of an electric storage battery separator material, in which case the base material may comprise about 10% glass fibres and 90% cellulosic pulp, which may be impregnated with an acid resisting phenol-formaldehyde resin and the thermoplastic may be polyvinyl chloride or acetate, polyethylene, or polymethyl methacrylate, the average diameter of the interstices being about a half-micron and the average diameter of the pores of the base material being about 40 microns. One of the faces of the battery separator material may be ribbed and the network extends thereover. As shown, base material 1 is ribbed by grooved and finned rollers 4 and 5, passed through kiss-coater 6 and resin bath 7, and is cured in oven 8. The material, cooled by blower 9, passes under vibrating hopper 10 containing particles of thermoplastic which fall on to the ribbed surface of the material. The particles are levelled off and surplus removed by stationary brush 11, and the residual particles are forced into the pores of the material by rotating brush 12. Cutters 13 chop the material into sheets which are sintered in oven 14. Specification 742,058 is referred to.
