Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions for systemic application, i.e. by oral, subcutaneous, intra-muscular, intra-articular, intrapertoneal, intra-venous, and intra-rectal routes, comprise a pharmaceutical carrier and biologically active glycyrrhetinic acid (as defined). There may be additionally present an "anti-causative agent" which is defined as meaning an antibiotic, antiseptic, bateriocidal, fungicidal, bacteriostatic insecticidal, antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory compound, an expectorant or an anti-ulcerogenic with which the active substance is stated to act synergistically. Specific examples thereof given are; aspirin, phenylbutazone, hydrocortisone hemisuccinate and prednisone. Reference is also made to the addition of antacids, analgesics and coagulents. Specific examples of compositions relate to tablets and to an aqueous injectable composition. Specifications 798,655, 799,415, 843,132, 843,133 and 843,134 are referred to.
