Abstract

842,967. Velocity-modulated tubes. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Nov. 6, 1958 [Dec 3, 1957], No. 35733/58. Class 39(1). A low noise electron gun, e.g. for travelling wave tubes, backward-wave amplifiers, magnetrons or klystrons, comprises, immersed in a longitudinal magnetic field, a cathode 134, Fig. 7, an accelerating electrode 146 and a beam forming electrode 140 shaped as shown and at a higher positive potential than the accelerating electrode so that electrons emitted from the cathode are constrained to flow through a substantially potential free region towards the accelerating electrode. The electron current density across the emissive surface of the cathode is as shown by curve 148 in Fig. 8. Further accelerating electrodes may be provided. The gun may be designed to produce a cylindrical beam, a sheet beam or an annular beam, Fig. 6, and the beam forming electrode may also have, in the case of a gun producing a cylindrical beam, surfaces 108, 110, Fig. 5, extending parallel to the cathode. Suitable voltages and dimensions are given.
