In a fluid-pressure braking system having variable load valves and operatively combined with a vehicle weighing mechanism, a calibrated spring 6 is interposed between one of the vehicle springs 2 and the vehicle under frame 3 and a lever 4 forms a connection between one end of spring 2 and the vehicle underframe 3 and a proportion of the vehicle weight acts down on one end of the lever through trunnions 5 by means of which the lever is mounted on the vehicle underframe 3, this load being balanced by the calibrated spring 6 acting downwards on the other end of the lever together with a control spring 7 of a variable load valve 8 such that the thrust of the calibrated spring 6 is taken by the vehicle frame whilst the thrust of the control spring 7 is against the controlling diaphragm 9 of the variable load valve 8. Thus movement of the calibrated spring 6 due to variations in the load carried by the vehicle, is used to determine the setting of the control spring 7 of the variable load valve 8.
