[Also in Group VIII] A face mask has a filter insert comprising a sheet of air-permeable fabric reinforced by an air-permeable screen, the two being stuck together around their edges and having a synthetic resin rim moulded on to the edge portion. In one form a sheet of non-woven, fibrous fabric 13, Fig. 2, is placed between two reinforcing screens 17, 17 of fibreglass mesh and the edges 12 b are treated with a rubber adhesive and compressed, so that the layers are firmly secured together. Such an insert is fitted with eye pieces 16, Fig. 4, and the whole is inserted in an injection moulding machine to form a synthetic resin rim 14 firmly secured to the filter element. This rim may have lugs 36 for the attachment of head straps. Several layers of filter material separated by reinforcing screens may be built up, in forming the filter element, and, if required to filter gases, the material may be impregnated with activated carbon.
