Abstract

842,657. Windows. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1957 [Aug. 8, 1956], No. 24410/57. Class 20(3) [Also in Group VIII] A transparent enclosure, e.g. an aircraft cockpit, comprises a frame 37, a rigid layer 30 of transparent material, a pliable layer 31 formed of a tough, resilient transparent material, bonded to the inner surface of the rigid layer within the enclosure, both said layers being secured to the frame, and a stabilizing layer 34 of transparent material thinner than either of the other layers bonded to the inner surface of the pliable layer within the enclosure'and secured only to this layer. The pliable and rigid layers may have marginal edges substantially coterminous and extending beyond the stabilizing layer. In a modification, inner and outer resilient layers are laminated to opposite sides of the rigid layer, said inner and outer pliable layers being substantially coterminous and engaging the frame for support, and stabilizing layers of transparent material thinner than either the rigid or resilient layers are laminated and secured solely to the inner and outer resilient layers. The rigid layer may be of glass, polyester resin, i.e. resin made by the esterification of polyhydric alcohols and polybasic acids, or polymethyl methacrylate. The pliable layer(s) may be of a synthetic plastic such as polyvinyl butyral. The stabilizing layer(s) are preferably of polymethyl methacrylate, but may be of polyester resin or glass.
