Abstract
842,332. Grinding. RONALDSON, J. V., and HOLLINGWORTH, R. C. June 25, 1958 [March 26, 1957], No. 9862/57. Class 60. [Also in Group XXVIII] A tool for the abrasive treatment of internal surfaces of tubular bodies, e.g. grinding, cleaning, de-scaling, fettling, smoothing, cutting, scoring &c. tubes &c., comprises a mounting head intended to be introduced into and rotated in the tubular body to be treated and a plurality of abrasive elements carried by the head so as to move outwardly of the head and into contact with the work under centrifugal action in response to the rotation of the head, the abrasive elements comprising cylindrical discs or rollers which are mounted on the head by eccentric pivot pins arranged around the head. A tool, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, comprises plates 1, 2 connected by a bolt 3 screwthreaded, at least at its ends, to receive fastening nuts 4, 5. Cylindrical abrading elements 7 are mounted eccentrically on pins 8 extending between the plates 1, 2. The innermost and outermost positions of the elements 7 are determined by pins 9, 10. The tool is secured to a stem 12 driven through a flexible shaft 14 by a motor 13. The stem 12 is supported by the central hub 17 of a spider 15 fitting within the end of the tube 11 being treated. In a modification, Fig. 5, a casing 37 with a butt 18 which can be gripped by the operator houses a motor 19 controlled by a trigger 22 and driving, through gearing 20, the stem 21 to which the tool is attached. Coolant or lubricant from line 23 passes through pipe 24, hollow tube 25, and axial and radial ducts 27, 28 in the bolt 26 between the plates 1, 2. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the tool has three heads 29, 30, 31 of different abrasive quality, the last head may comprise polishing elements. To perform cutting, the abrading elements are thin discs. The abrading elements may be formed of silicon carbide or aluminium oxide grits with vitreous, resin or lacquer bond, natural or synthetic stones, box wood for use with diamond paste, metal with a diamond impregnated. surface or a diamond set surface or a metal body coated with other hard materials, e.g. tungsten carbide. For polishing, they comprise metal, plastic or wood faced with felt or pressed cotton or felt in layered form.
