Abstract
842,310. Mixing-apparatus. CHEMETRON CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1958 [Aug. 15, 1958], No. 39551/58. Class 86 Apparatus for mixing materials whilst subjecting them to heat-exchange comprises a cylindrical treatment chamber 11 having a jacket 15 for the heating or cooling medium, and a rotary shaft 26, carrying scraping-blades 30, so arranged within the chamber that the distance between shaft and the walls of the chamber is not constant, the maximum distance being at least one and a half times the minimum distance. As shown, the shaft 26 is carried in bearings 22, 23 arranged eccentrically of the chamber 11, and the scraping blades 30 are notched at 31 to be accommodated in notches 33 in pins 32 screwed into the shaft 26, pins 35 engaging slots in the blades to locate them. The blades are subject to centrifugal force which keeps them pressed into scraping contact with the chamber walls. The blades are preferably short and spaced to an extent less than the length of the blades, so that the blades in staggered rows have overlapping scraping zones. The material is pumped in at 40 and leaves at 41, whilst heat exchange fluid is supplied and exhausted at 18, 20. The non-uniform distance between the shaft 26 and the chamber walls prevents mass rotation of the material in the chamber, and improves the heat-exchange efficiency. Also, the inward and outward movements of the blades enhances the mixing efficiency of the apparatus. In Fig. 4, the blades 51 are accommodated in recesses in the shaft 53, locating pins 56 being provided to engage slots in the blades. In Fig. 5, the blades 61 are cranked to improve the angle of scraping-contact, the blades having circular beads 63 which are oscillatable in recesses in pins 65 screwed into the shaft 53 at the ends of each blade. The processing of liquid or semi-plastic materials such as margarine, ice cream, peanut butter, lubricating grease, confections, triglyceride oils and detergents, and the use of water, brine, ammonia or steam as heat-exchange media are mentioned.
