In a Fourdrinier paper-making machine wherein pulp is felted under pressure on the wire cloth 11 above the breast roll 13, the flowbox has a generally cylindrical flow-regulating compartment 125 in the middle of which is a flow-controlling cylinder &c. 127 about which part of the pulp re-circulates, and which can be adjusted by rotating shaft projections 137 on which it is mounted : fins or vanes 154 projecting from the cylinder &c. 127 are angularly positioned between 30 to 180 degrees from the downwardly directed plane from the centre of the compartment and provide spaced secondary passageways for the re-circulating pulp, the width of such passageways being from 20 to 80% of the average height of the main recirculating passageway 150. Part of the pulp flows backwardly at 113 over the breast roll 13. A throttle control 129 is provided, and the apron plate 109 can be adjusted by the use of removable spacing bars 117 of various widths. The lip of the slice 177 is adjustable by a series of rods 181 and L-section seals of rubber &c. are provided at each end of the slice. The breast roll 13 is formed with vanes 71 having tapered, forwardly bent extremities 75 supporting edgewise a helical ribbon 79 of bronze &c. upon which the wire cloth 11 may rest, or there may be an interposed coarse-mesh woven-wire covering. A tray (not shown in Fig. 2) collecting water draining through the wire cloth 11 is positioned between the upper and lower reaches thereof, the tray discharging into a tank wherein pulp is mixed for supplying the flow-box. In a modification, the flow-control cylinder 127 is plain, and is axially mounted for rotation e.g. at 400 to 600 r.p.m., fins being fitted to the wall of the compartment 125.
