Abstract

841,951. Refrigerating. XFLO HEAT EXCHANGERS Ltd. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957], No. 4673/57. Class 29 A refrigerant evaporator or condenser comprises spaced parallel vertical refrigerant tubes 3 extending between upper and lower horizontal headers 4, 5,and enclosed by rectangular flat vertical side plates 1, 2, inlet and outlet connections 15, 16 being provided to the space between the plates for the fluid being cooled or heated. As shown the plates are connected together and the space between them sealed by outwardly-facing end channels 6, 7 and bolts 12. The tops and bottoms of the space are closed by channels 8, 9 apertured to receive the ends of tubes 3, tubes 22 extending between the flanges of each channel. Bolts 24 take through apertures in the plates 1, 2 and through the tubes 22 to hold the parts together. The headers comprise tubes having cut-out parts coinciding with channels 8, 9. The headers may have a detachable part to facilitate cleaning of tubes 3. The headers may have transverse partitions to cause the refrigerant to flow through tubes 3 in more than one pass. The other fluid is caused to flow in more than one pass by horizontal baffles 31 held in position frictionally by plates 1, 2 which are drawn together by bolts 28 passing through the plates and through tubes 27 spanning the space between them. Several units as above described can be assembled side by side the side plates being omitted between adjacent units and the assembly being held together by elongated bolts 12, 24, 28. Aligned baffles 31 are drawn against one another by the bolts 28, adjacent edges having concave resilient fittings which abut. Instead of being flat, the side plates can be concentric cylinders forming an annular space closed at its ends by annular headers receiving the tubes.
