Abstract

Compositions comprise aqueous dispersions of copolymers of 50 to 95 % of tetrafluoroethylene and 50 to 5% of hexafluoropropene, 1 to 50% by weight of copolymer of a first wetting agent which is anionic or non-ionic and compatible with the other constituents of the compositions, and 0.2 to 10% of a second wetting agent which is a water-soluble alkali salt of a perfluoromonocarboxylic acid having 4 to 10 carbon atoms or a chromium complex of such an acid. Specified non-ionic and anionic wetting agents are alkyl aryl polyglycol ethers, e.g. octylphenol polyglycol ether, alkyl aryl sulphonates, e.g. alkyl naphthalene sulphonates, and condensation products of ethylene oxide with fatty acids. The second wetting agent may be ammonium perfluorocaprylate or the chromium complex of perfluorocaprylic acid. The compositions may also comprise fillers and pigments, e.g. talc, titanium dioxide, mica, silica, and finely divided copper, aluminium and iron. They may be coated on fabrics, e.g. woven or non-woven fabrics of glass, cotton, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, polytetrafluoroethylene and asbestos, and the coatings dried and fused by heating. The coated fabrics may be used in electrical insulation for cables. U.S.A. Specifications 2,313,477, 2,549,935 and 2,662,835 are referred to.
