Abstract
Polyvinyl chloride resin stabilisers comprise a substantially non-volatile triester of phosphorous acid of formula <FORM:0841890/IV(a)/1> in which at least one R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, or an alkylene group occupies two of the R positions and the remaining R is an alkyl or aryl group, alone or with a non-volatile epoxidised ester of a C12-22 unsaturated fatty acid or epoxidised ether, the proportions of said triester and the epoxidised ester or ether being 1,5 to 5 and 2 to 10 parts, respectively. The stabilisers may also contain 0,5 to 2 parts of a substantially non-volatile alkylphenol, when the phosphorous ester contains no aryl group, and 0,02 to 0,3 parts of a zinc, cadmium, tin or lead salt of a C6 to C18 carboxylic acid, the stabilisers being incorporated in polyvinyl chloride resins in the specified amounts per 100 parts of resin. The phosphite may be monooctyl diphenyl, dioctyl monophenyl, trioctyl, monododecyl diphenyl, didodecyl monophenyl, tridodecyl, monobutyl diphenyl, dibutyl monocresyl, monobutyl dioctylphenyl, monooctyl propylene glycol, monophenyl propylene glycol and monopheynl 1,6-hexanediol phosphite. Specified epoxides are epoxidised triglycerides, butyl, hexyl and octyl esters of soya bean, corn or cotton seed oil fatty acids or oleic acid, the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol and 3,4-epoxy-6-methyl cyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexane carboxylate. Specified alkyl phenols are dibutyl-cresol, octyl, nonyl and dodecyl phenols, and diamyl, dinonyl and didodecyl phenols and butylated hydroxy anisole. Specified metal salts are those of caproic, 2-ethylhexoic, lauric, naphthenic, palmitic, stearic and benzoic acids. The resin may polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with minor amounts of vinyl acetate, styrene or diethyl maleate, and conventional plasticisers, e.g. dibutyl, dioctyl and didodecyl phthalate, sebacate and adipate, may also be incorporated.
