Abstract

841,785. Rolling screw-threads. HERBERT Ltd., A. Nov. 28, 1958 (Dec. 16, 1957], No. 38985/57. Class 83 (4). A screw-thread rolling head comprises inclined ridged rollers 20, with each roller j ournalled in a member 38 slidable in a composite portion 27, 34 along a tangent to a common circle about the axis of the head, and a further portion 21 rotatable with the composite portion but relative to which the composite portion is movable axially between two positions, the portion 21 carrying means coacting with the members 38 so that in one position of the composite portion the rollers are urged into engagement with the work against biasing means which, when the two portions 21 and 27, 34 are moved relatively and axially to the second position by interaction of the work on the rollers, move the members 38 to disengage the rollers from the workpiece. The roller-carrying members 38 are mounted between an assembly which comprises a front plate 34 and an intermediate plate 27 and are slidable along guide surfaces 36a and 37a. The intermediate plate 27 and the back plate 21 are both splined to a hollow shank 23 of the head for rotation together. A camplate 49 fixed by screws 25 to the back-plate 21 is adjustable by screws 57 engaging bosses 51 of the cam-plate to accommodate varying diameters of workpiece in the head. On completion of a length of thread the assembly 34, 27 is pulled away axially from the back-plate 21, against springs 30, Fig. 2, not shown, by the action of the thread on the rollers until followers 45 depending from the members 38 rise sufficiently for projections 56 on the cam 49 to engage in the steps 48 of the followers. At this point a spring-biased ring 26 having slots 52 engaging the steps 48 move the followers 45 to the left from the position of Fig. 7 to the position of Fig. 6 so that the roller-carrying members 38 move tangentially to disengage the rollers from the work. The rollers are re-set in the operative position by manual rotation of the ring 26 against the spring bias so that springs may return the assembly axially to abut the ring 26, as shown in Fig. 7. The set-up of the rollerhead is indicated on a scale 58 on the plate 27.
