Abstract

841,743. Pug mills. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 11, 1959 [March 21, 1958], No. 9100/58. Addition to 787,764. Class 86 The apparatus of the parent Specification is modified to avoid pulsing and consequent ridges in the extruded material by dividing the teeth of one member into a plurality of sections along its length as at 13, 14, successive sections being relatively displaced around the longitudinal axis. Thus when the outer member has two sections 13, 14, Fig. 1, the teeth of one section 14 coincide with the spaces between the teeth of the inner member at the same time as the teeth of the other section 13 overlap the teeth of the inner member, Fig. 3. The teeth are arranged in axial parallel lines which may be straight or helical. The teeth may be angled to assist flow, and may be thicker and smaller, and thus stronger, at the feed end. The inner member may be integral with or separate from the feed screw 10; it may be driven by the feed screw or independently; a torque limiting device may be interposed; other methods of feeding, e.g. gear pumps and pressure melters, may be used. The apparatus is assembled by attaching the outer case 17 over the member 11, successively inserting and locking to the case 17 the parts 14, 13, and attaching the nozzle 18. Heating and cooling methods are described. The apparatus is stated to be particularly suited to the extrusion of the normally solid polymers of ethylene, linear superpolyamides, linear superpolyesters, and polypropylene.
