A filter element 12, Fig. 1, is secured by a bolt 39 in the bottom of a bowl 11 and when the bowl is inserted in the socket 14 of a head 10 and rotated through 90 degrees to engage bayonet lugs 32 with grooves in portion 33, lugs 45 at the top of the bowl engage spider arms 43 on a rotary sleeve valve member 20 to turn it into the position of Fig. 2, where incoming liquid at 19 passes between the ends 27 of spring arms 28, Fig. 2, and flows via inlet chamber 53 to the bowl space outside the filter element. Filtered oil or hydraulic fluid rises through passage 23, Fig. 1, and out at 18, Fig. 2. In the reverse manipulation, valve member 20 cuts off 18 and 19 before the bowl can be withdrawn. 13 is an excess-pressure by-pass valve. In Fig. 5, filter element 86 is secured in bowl 85 against spring pressure 103 by engagement of a spider 92a (slipped over an outlet fitting 92 on the element and resting on the member 91) under lugs in the bowl, one, 96, having pin and slot connection with the spider 92a. Upon rotation of the bowl to effect bayonet engagement, as before, with head 54, three pins, (one (110) smaller than the other two), on the spider 92a, engage sockets in a part 74 of a rotary disc valve so that the valve is rotated into the position of Fig. 5, where liquid entering at 66 passes through a circular hole 60 in part 74 and through the filter, the filtrate passing along passage 83a in part 74 and through a circular port therein to outlet 67. An excess-pressure by-pass valve (not shown) is provided in a passage leading to passage 117, Fig. 5, from which a passage 119 leads to the outlet passage 63, and from which a further passage 118 (not shown) leads optionally to a by-pass passage. In Fig. 12 (not shown) the embodiment of Fig. 5 is modified and provided with an air-release valve which is open during engagement and disengagement of the bowl.
