Abstract

841,313. Wrappings. CHALMERS, J. W., JACKSON, D. R. P., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1956 [Sept. 16, 1955], No. 26590/55. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XVI] An apparatus for feeding a web and a strip of flexible material narrower then the web, in superimposed relationship and cutting sections therefrom, comprises a pair of opposed rollers to grip the web and the strip between them, one of the rollers being a composite roller and having a part arranged to engage only the web and a displaceable part arranged to engage only the strip and to be moved away from and towards the other roller to allow the strip to be fed between it and the other roller at a faster speed than that of the web, and cutting means to cut the web and strip whereby each cut section comprises a'piece of web and a longer piece of strip extending beyond the leading edge of the piece of web. As shown, a web 1 of foil, e.g., metallic foil, is fed downwardly between opposed feeding rollers 2 and 3. The roller 2 is positively driven, while the roller 3 is freely mounted and is driven by the roller 2. The roller 3 comprises two spaced apart sections 3a and 3b with a narrow roller 4 of larger diameter fitted in between on an eccentric part 6 of a shaft 5. A rubber-faced roller 7 corresponding in width to the roller 4 is positively driven at a faster peripheral speed than the roller 2. The roller 7 co-operates, at certain times, with the roller 4 to feed a narrow strip 8 of transparent wrapping material. At other times the strip 8 passes freely between the rollers 4 and 7 and is gripped between the rollers 4 and 2 so as to be fed with the web 1. The angular setting of the shaft 5 may be adjusted to control the engagement of the roller 4 with the rollers 7 and 2. The roller 2 is secured to a shaft 10 carrying a pinion 11 which meshes with an idler pinion 12, thus driving a pinion 13 on a shaft 14 carrying the roller 7. The roller 4 is driven either by the roller 2 or the roller 7. The shaft 14 is carried by a bracket 16, while a bracket 17 supports both ends of the shaft 5, a short arm 20, secured to the shaft 5 is attached to a spring 21 fixed at its opposite end to a pin 22 on the bracket 17, thus urging the shaft 5 clockwise to urge the roller 4 into engagement with the roller 2. An arm 23 on the shaft 5 has a flat ledge 24 for engagement with a part 25 of a cam 26. The cam 26 carries a pinion 27 driven by a pinion 29 of a compound gear comprising also a pinion 28. The pinion 28 is driven by the pinion 11 such that the cam 26 revolves once for every two revolutions of the gear 11 and roller 2. The arm 23 is swung counterclockwise on engagement of the ledge 24 by the part 25, thereby swinging the eccentric part 6 such that the rollers 4 and 7 engage to feed the strip 8 while the roller 4 disengages the roller 2. In operation, a length of web 1 and superimposed strip 8 are cut off by a cutting device 9 similar to that described in Specification 432,322 and comprising a blade 30 mounted on a vertical shaft 31 and co-operating with a fixed blade 32. During this operation the web 1 and strip 8 are fed together by the rollers 2 and 4. The part 25 of the cam 26 then causes the roller 4 to engage the roller 7 to feed the strip 8 at a faster speed than the rollers 2 and 3 feed the strip 1. Upon disengagement of the part 25 from the ledge 24, the arm 23 is swung clockwise by the spring 21 to re-engage the roller 4 with the roller 2. Adhesive is applied to the strip 8 at such a position that the gummed portion passes beneath and clear of the roller 7 when the roller 4 has swung away. The gummed portion is pressed by the roller 4 against the web 1 and adheres to it. A portion of the strip 8 overlaps the web 1 so as to be readily grasped for partially ejecting cigarettes from a wrapping, Fig. 7, formed from the web 1 and strip 8. When the part 101 is removed a part 102 of the strip 8 may be easily grasped. Alternatively, the strip may act as a tear strip 113, Fig. 8, for a wrapper 110.
