Abstract
Water-insoluble, alkali-soluble copolymers are made by adding an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, e.g. methyl methacrylate to an aqueous solution of methacrylic acid in a proportion of from 10 to 70% of the ester on the weight of total monomers and effecting copolymerization at a temperature not substantially exceeding 65 DEG C. in the presence of a percompound as a catalyst, whilst agitating to form an aqueous dispersion of the copolymer. Catalysts specified are the alkali metal and ammonium persulphates, an additional quantity of which may be added during the course of the reaction. The polymerization may be conducted in two stages, first at a lower and then at a higher temperature. The aqueous polymerization medium may contain a water miscible organic solvent such as methanol or acetone. In an Example (6) the use of a polymerization medium containing a small quantity of formic acid is illustrated. The copolymer products are soluble in aqueous caustic soda and ammonia.
