Abstract

840,678. Grinding. BRYANT CHUCKING GRINDER CO. April 18, 1957 [April 23, 1956], No. 12729 /57. Class 60. [Also in Group XXIX] Means for reciprocating a machine tool part, such as the grinding head of an internal grinding machine, comprises a servo-piston 44, Fig. 11, connected by a rod 46 to the grinding head and controlled by a piston valve 54 which is operated by a lever 82 and has a feed-back connection, consisting of a parallelogram linkage 72, 74, 76, 78 supported by a leaf spring 58, with the piston 44. The arrangement is such that rotation of an eccentric 86 from the position shown causes the lever 82 to rock in a clockwise sense about a pivot 84 and, due to engagement of the lower end of the lever with a point 80 of the parallelogram linkage, to cause leftward motion of the piston valve 54 to initiate movement in the same direction of the piston 44, such movement advancing the grinding head into the bore of the workpiece. The motion of the piston 44 is transmitted to the lever 72 which pivots about its connection with the link 76 to return the valve 54 to its neutral position. The piston 44 may be held in its advanced position before the cam 86 is rotated to cause its return movement, and whilst it is so held, or at any other time, a short stroke reciprocatory movement may be imparted to it by a rotating cam 96 into contact with which a follower 94 connected to the pivot 84 may be brought upon operation of an arm 98 by, e.g. a hydraulic cylinder. In a modification, the eccentric 86 is replaced by a cam of more complex shape which, by intermittent movement, provides firstly an advance movement of the grinding head for a rough grinding phase, then a comparatively slow withdrawal of the head to a position in which the grinding wheel is dressed by a diamond tool, after which the head is again advanced for the finish grinding phase and finally withdrawn completely. The grinding head consists of a tubular member 24, Fig. 3, having trunnions 28 mounted in preloaded ball bearings 22 in a housing 20, and a tubular member 30 which may reciprocate in the member 24 on preloaded balls 32, the member 30 carrying the grinding wheel T which is mounted on a spindle 18 driven at high rotational speed by e.g. an electric or hydraulic motor. The member 24, which is supported at its end remote from the grinding wheel by a vertically adjustable bar with ball slide members 38, is laterally adjustable for feed along the axis of the trunnions.
