Abstract

840,650. Moulding ceramic materials. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 8, 1958, No. 28783/58. Class 87(2). In an absorbent hollow cylindrical mould which is rotatable about a horizontal axis to slipcast ceramic material therein centrifugally, one of the end wall members of the mould is transparent so that the appearance of the rotating slip is used to determine the duration of the moulding operation. A barium titanate slip composition is applied to nipple 18 and passes through slots 13a in arbor 13 into the mould 26 which has end walls 27, 28 of plaster of Paris and glass respectively. A nut 33 on the arbor and a pressure plate 40 clamps the end walls 27, 28 to the mould 26. A cylindrical casting 35 is made, the rotation being stopped when the free liquid component of the slip disappears from the inner surface, and with the mould vertical, a wall 36 is pour-cast on plate 27 with a stop 35a in its central aperture. The mould is then inverted and the casting dried until it can be removed from the mould. After further drying the casting is fired : the supporting wall 36 serves to prevent distortion during drying and firing and is later sawn off.
