Abstract
A heat-hardenable resinous material comprises an interpolymer of an acrylamide and at least two other ethylenically-unsaturated monomers, one of which is an ethylenically-unsaturated acid, the p interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure -ROR1, wherein R is a saturated lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R1 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical. Amides specified are acrylamide, methacrylamide and itaconic diamide. Acids specified are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids. Other monomers specified are methyl, ethyl, butyl, isobutyl, hexyl and octyl acrylates, glycidyl acrylate, durenediol and dimethylbenzyl methacrylates, styrene, vinyl toluene, dibutyl maleate, maleic anhydride, allyl acetoacetate, vinyl pyridines, vinyl ketones and vinyl ethers. The resinous material may be obtained by condensing the acrylamide interpolymer with a lower aliphatic aldehyde; alternatively the acrylamide may first be reacted with the aldehyde and then copolymerized with the other monomers. Aldehydes specified are formaldehyde, trioxymethylene, hexamethylene tetramine, acetaldehyde and butyraldehyde. If the reaction with the aldehyde is carried out in the presence of an alkanol etherification of the alkylol groups results. The resinous materials are useful in coating applications for which purpose they may compound with additional materials; in the example an acrylamide/styrene/ethyl acrylate/ acrylic acid interpolymer is reacted with a butanol solution of formaldehyde and then formulated into a coating composition by admixture with titanium dioxide, a solution of an epoxy resin in a mixture of methyl isobutyl ketone and xylol, pine oil, "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate and a silicone solution. The Specification gives details of the preparation of the acrylamide polymers with the aid of specified solvents, catalysts and modifiers. Specification 826,652 is referred to.ALSO:Primed and unprimed steel panels are coated by spraying with an enamel comprising a formaldehyde modified styrene/ethyl acrylate/acrylamide/acrylic acid interpolymer, a solution of an epoxy resin, titanium dioxide "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate, pine oil and a silicone solution, followed by the curing of the resulting coatings by heating at 300 DEG F. Specification 826,652 is referred to.
